Currently in Seattle — September 20, 2023: Misty Wed. morning

Plus, Antarctic sea ice is having a weird year.

The weather, currently.

Morning showers will turn to clouds and sunshine in the afternoon

Overnight showers should lighten up throughout the day on Wednesday, but it’s gonna be a misty (at best) and soggy (at worst) morning commute.

Things will warm up to about 65 in the afternoon, and clouds should break up toward evening for a sunnier outlook on Thursday.

In a more dramatic show of the seasonal shift to autumn, this weather front has the chance of turning to light snow (!!) in the high country around Mount Rainier, the North Cascades and the Olympics.

What you need to know, currently.

There was a spectacular display of northern lights — aurora borealis — on Tuesday, caused by a direct hit from particles sent Earthward from a solar explosion.

We’re in the middle of a multi-year peak of activity on the sun, so northern lights should be more common than in previous years. And the best time to see them is during the fall and winter, when the temperatures aren’t yet too cold, and the nights are getting nice and long.

One of my favorite websites, spaceweather.com, will keep you up-to-date on upcoming chances to see the aurora.
